A private chauffeur is a professional driver with a company car, booked in advance for a set trip or by the hour. The usual vehicle is a saloon for one or two people and a van for groups of up to eight. The service is used for airport pickups, work meetings, weddings, one-day sightseeing and client transfers. Car with driver: what the rules say

Hiring a car with driver, known as VTC in Spain, has its own rules. According to articles 180 and 181 of the land transport regulation in the BOE, only cars can be hired with a driver, each vehicle needs its own authorisation, and the maximum is nine seats including the driver.

Article 182 adds that the contract must be formalised before the service starts and that the documents proving it must be on board. A serious company therefore asks for your trip details before it sets out and does not pick you up without a booking. If these rules are ignored, treat it as a red flag.

How does a chauffeur differ from a taxi?

The practical difference is the price and the booking. A taxi has an official tariff and you can flag it down, while a chauffeur is booked ahead at an agreed price. For comparison, these are the 2026 urban taxi rates from the Institut Metropolità del Taxi:
